Read of the Week
Here’s the story featured on this week’s Mind of Micah podcast: How Nespresso's coffee revolution got ground down.
It’s a fascinating story about product innovation, brand building, extremely petty corporate executives, environmental and ethical responsibilities, and George Clooney.
Successful products can look inevitable in hindsight, but the gap in the market wasn’t obvious. At the time, two kinds of coffee were drunk at home. There was roast and ground, which was tasty but laborious, whether prepared in a cafetière, stove-top or filter machine. Or there was soluble instant coffee, which was quick and easy but had an unsubtle flavour. To be tempting at a higher price, Favre’s new machine had to offer high-quality coffee with the speed and ease of instant.
Delicious.

Food Thoughts
It’s summertime, and fresh corn is really good. You should buy some. This article shares some interesting information about how to pick, store, clean and cook peak summer corn.
Chef, farmer and author Abra Berens says the husks should be closer to bright green, with perhaps a bit of yellowing near the tip of the cob. She also suggests looking at the silks. They naturally wither after pollination, but the drier they are toward the corn, the longer it has been off the stalk. Like a melon, an ear of corn should feel heavy for its size, which indicates it is juicy.
Delicious.
Really Gross Story About Corruption and Power That Will Probably Lead Some People to Unsubscribe from This Newsletter and Call me a Cuck
Here’s a brilliantly reported story about how the Vice President pressured the Navy to welcome back the disgraced former Governor of Missouri to return as a reservist:
Despite concern, Navy gave Greitens ‘red carpet’ return after pressure from VP Pence
You may ask yourself, what’s the big deal? Greitens was a former Navy SEAL, why wouldn’t he be welcomed back to the Navy after leaving office?
This is why:
Although Greitens’ time as Missouri governor was short — only 17 months from inauguration to resignation — it was marked by non-stop fights with his fellow Republicans and a deluge of allegations of corruption largely stemming from his reliance on anonymous campaign contributions routed through secretive nonprofits.
The most explosive scandal, and the one that resulted in many of his fellow Republicans calling for his resignation or impeachment, involved allegations by a woman with whom Greitens had a brief affair in 2015.
She testified under oath that Greitens taped her hands to pull-up rings in his basement, blindfolded her, spit water into her mouth, ripped open her shirt, pulled down her pants and took a photo of her to use as blackmail to keep her from talking about their relationship.
Yuck.
